  • Q: What is the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil?
  • A: The Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil is a clear laminated and lightweight plastic foil that can be applied to virtually any display screen or non-metallic surface to make it touch interactive.

  • Q: How does the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil work?
  • A: The Touch Foil uses projected capacitance technology comprised of a clear laminated plastic foil with an embedded XY grid of sensing wires that lead to a controller interface to a CPU. When this substrate is touched the capacitance changes and this change is detected and the X and Y co-ordinates are calculated by the computer.

  • Q: What sizes of Touch Foils are available?
  • A: The Touch Foil is manufactured in sizes ranging from a minimum of 30" diagonal to 167" diagonal and in most any aspect ratio.

  • Q: Is there a front and back to the Touch Foil?
  • A: The Touch Foil is interactive from both sides of the plastic laminate. Where a permanent adhesive is specified, the Touch Foil can only be applied on one side to the substrate.

  • Q: Where can the Controller be positioned?
  • A: The Touch Foil can be ordered with the Controller Board positioned either along the long edge or the short edge of the active area. Note that specific Drivers are required for either position.

  • Q: What powers the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil?
  • A: A USB 2.0 HID A Male: Mini B Male connection powers the Touch Foil. A Serial Controller Board is also available and requires between 5 and 12 volts.

  • Q: What is the maximum cable length to the CPU?
  • A: Touch Foils are shipped with 5 metre USB cables. Longer cables to 15 metres require active extenders. Cables longer than 15 metres require USB to Cat5 extenders.

  • Q: Can the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil be used with Bluetooth?
  • A: Clients have successfully built custom Bluetooth to Serial adapters. These are not available from the factory.

  • A: Touch Foil Drivers are currently available for Mac 5.7 Version 10.5: Leopard, 5.8 Version 10.6: Snow Leopard, and 5.9 Version 10.7: Lion.

  • Q: Are Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foils compatible with Linux?
  • A: Touch Foil drivers are currently available for Fedora 13 Goddard, Kubuntu 9.04, 10.04 and 11.04, and Ubuntu 9.04, 10.04 and 11.04.

  • Q: Does the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil work with LCD screens?
  • A: LCD panels to 70" require spacing to the Touch Foil of 8 to 10 mm and up to 12 mm for larger panels. Tighter spacing may work with LED backlit panels. When double glazing is used, spacing 12mm or more is required. The installer should test the setup onsite to determine the correct solution.

  • Q: Does the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foil work with Plasma screens?
  • A: No. Plasma generates excessive electrical noise and interfere with the operation of the Touch Foil.

  • Q: Is Cling Film compatible with acrylic?
  • A: Over time static Cling Film will migrate into the acrylic and make a permanent bond. Some acrylics will also outgass and create bubbles. The use of Cling Film is best suited to glass.

  • Q: Does the Touch Foil work with any type of glass?
  • A: Touch Foils require non-metallic and non-conductive glass to funtion.

  • Q: What is the maximum thickness of substrate allowed?
  • A: Standard configuration function with non-metallic, non-conductive single pane glass to 20mm inclusive of spacing.

  • Q: Can the Touch Foil be applied to curved substrates?
  • A: Yes. Note that the radius of the glass must not exceed 90 degrees and the curve must be in just one direction.

  • Q: What are the mounting options to install the Touch Foil?
  • A: Cling Film is held in place by static to glass and is easily removed and reapplied.
  • Permanent with clean peel allows the Touch Foil to be repositioned to glass or acrlyic during installation and for several months after.
  • Permanent allows the Touch Foil to be applied to glass or acrlyic.

  • Q: Can the Visual Planet Interactive Touch Foils be re-installed?
  • A: The Cling Film is reusable but must be handled with care between installations. Replacement Cling Film is available for a modest cost.
  • If you intend to relocate the Touch Foil using the Permanent Cleen Peel mounting method, be sure to retain the release layer so that it can be applied to the Touch Foil to protect the adhesive from dust and debris.

  • A: Yes. The Edge Function enables calibration of a Touch Foil that is smaller than the display screen.

  • Q: What should be checked if the Touch Foil is not responding?
  • A: Check that the Controller Board is connected correctly. Next confirm that the "Enabled Selected Control" box in the "Output" tab is checked and that the correct Driver has been selected. Clean the gold contacts on the orange flexible circuit and re-connect the Controller Board.

  • Q: Why is the cursor behaving erratically on the LCD?
  • A: This can be caused by interference with the outermost wire in the Touch Foil.
  • Reduce the coarse sensitivity slightly on the controller settings and confirm that the Touch Foil is grounded to the LCD. Test to determine if the Touch Foil is too close to the LCD.
